The early series " One-Hour Portrait" (2001-02) by Kyungwoo Chun operates with the titular exposure times of one hour each. Sitting for a portrait for a whole hour is a special performative act that we are not used to nowadays and that creates areas of blur through the smallest movements.
This creates a special relationship of closeness and simultaneous distance between the portrayed and the photographer, the image and the portrayed person, as well as the photograph and the recipient. The medium of photography is used poetically and powerfully as an instrument to depict traces of presence.
