Bernhard Knaus is pleased to announce the solo exhibition “BreaThings” with new photographic works by Kyungwoo Chun.
Works by the Korean artist Kyungwoo Chun are quite exceptional but not photography in the classical sense. His work reflects influences of East Asian aesthetic and the tradition of portrait photography. In his pictures, whose exposure time can range from several minutes to several days, the physiognomies of the persons are out of focus an float in overlapping time states between conrecte corporeality and increasing abstraction.
In his latest series called „BreaThings“ at the first view not the portrayed persons are focused but their favorite objects. During the long exposure time the chosen objects are held very close to the body. Through the up and down movement of the breathing person - book, vase or doll seem to be transformed into something living. They turn as a “ body extension” into a part of the person and his personality. Although the objects show a very intimate aspect of personality, without revealing the faces, the images keep their secret and abstract caracter.
According to his international exhibition project „Thousands“, his new book will be released in July 2008 at Hatje Cantz Publishers, text by Wulf Herzogenrath, Urs Stahel and others. At the exhibition project following museums take part: Total Museum Seoul, Korea, Centro Huarte, Navarra, Spain, Kunsthalle Emden, Germany, Kunsthalle Erfurt, Germany.
Kyungwoo Chun participates with his project "Thousands" at Liverpool Biennial, Fantasy Studio Project, A Foundation, Liverpool , 20th September - 30th November, 2008
