Skylines Night

While the daytime “Skylines” series features nature themes such as beaches, rocks or fields without exception, Peters addresses civilizational subject matter in its nighttime pendant. In doing so, he places the focus on the contrast between subject matter and color: Objects belonging to human civilization stand out from the black nighttime background by virtue of being illuminated by their own light sources. The contours of carousel, giant wheel or street begin to dissolve here. What is striking is the characteristic spatial dominance of the sky due to the prominent portrait format employed in these photographs. As a consequence of this choice of format, the subject matter fills merely the lower third of each image, creating a stage-like effect. The larger part of the image has the viewer gazing into the nightly black void. The analogy to the visual aesthetic of social networks and digital media is remarkable: In these, the portrait format is ubiquitous due to the use of mobile phone cameras.
