Men / Women

Visibility of binary gender constructions is the central theme of the series "Männer/Frauen” (Men/Women, 1998/99), in which Peters photographed pedestrians in New York City from near and far distances. Mounted on a computer in a diptych separated by gender, he questions whether we are dealing with two separate urban spaces in which women (Broadway) and men (9th Avenue) move separately from each other. In addition to an intentionally clichéd staging of the city's two neighborhoods, the viewer is deliberately deceived by the simulated separation of the sexes.
