Peters has titled his image series of brightly colored abstract compositions “Candies” (2002-2003). In creating it he visited holiday resorts and obscured his subject matter through shooting at a wide aperture setting, which inhibits the lens from focusing on the object photographed.
In this way he almost entirely diffuses the plasticity of his subject matter and the shapes of the spaces in which it is located. This was followed up by digital editing of the colors, tonal values and saturation, through with contours of the photographed themes are broken open and candy-colorful effect is intensified.
The artist’s colorful and abstract photographed landscapes, groups of people and bathing beaches are reminiscent of the abstract paintings by the Impressionists and Fauvists, who used color to transport a subjective sensory impression instead of depicting their personal observations of their environment in as realistic a way possible. Like the Avant Garde painters, Peters is most interested in evolving a new visual effect and theory of colors. He seeks to establish a new way of seeing our digital society.
