At the core of the series "Stage of being" lies the human figure. In 2018, Robert Zandvliet explored the depiction of the human figure on paper, handmade paper or canvas with oil pastels, graphite, acrylic or tempera.
Central to his compositions is always a structure, usually consisting of no more than a recess in the paint, which is reminiscent of a human body.
Often, the figure is framed by convex areas of color at the upper and lower edges of the painting. Sometimes horizontal structures in the center of the image draw it towards left and right.
Due to the emphasis on the centre of the image and the combination with the color surfaces, the figure appears predominantly isolated and exposed. Its compact and still posture reinforces this impression.
With the series "Stage of Being", Zandvliet focuses on the perceived existence of man. He is not concerned with reproducing a person, but rather with capturing the conditions of life and being with painterly means.
