With "Relics" the Düsseldorf painter Stefan à Wengen presents his third exhibition at Galerie Bernhard Knaus Fine Art in Frankfurt am Main.
In the show, new large and small-scale paintings by the artist raise questions around the ambiguity of the English term "Relics" in an interplay with the never before shown conceptual artworks "Homo Helveticus" and "Relics“. Mostly in black and white, à Wengen's new works are connected with his earlier series, thematizing topoi that have emerged in art history again and again, such as the keywords death, desire, and temporality. Paintings with cowboys as well as colorful zebras, cows and horses offer points of contrast in the exhibition and playfully respond to the all-encompassing melancholy that the artist addresses.
Stefan à Wengen (*1964 in Basel) has been a lecturer in art history and co-founder of the project space SPAM-Contemporary in Düsseldorf since his education at the Schule für Gestaltung in Basel. His works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany and abroad, including Zurich and New York. They are also part of international art collections.
