Night Colours

As in his series “Winter,” Peters devotes himself to the theme of night in the series “Night/Colors”. Here, the focus is on bridges and architecture as well as trees. Peters illuminates his subject matter using flood lights so as to bring out surface details in a theatrical way. The effect of the glowing sculptural bodies is intensified by the contrasting night black background. This makes the everyday objects appear downright transcendental. In contrast to the “Winter” series, the themes appear aggrandized in a melodramatic way, artificially floating and plucked out of their surroundings. In the series Peters prompts the question whether these images are an authentic documentation of scenes that have not been digitally tweaked, or a cleverly conceived visual montage. This paradox is characteristic of Peters’ visual language, which he wields to examine the flood of images in the mass media according to their claim to truth.
