Solnhofen (1991)

The little community of Solnhofen in Bavaria plays a major role in Europe's Christian architectural landscape due to its quarry. The series “Solnhofen” (1991) depicts the quarry in a panoramic perspective as a torn-open ruin in the middle of an open landscape. The series can be read as a documentation of the exploitation of natural resources, and an object for the sublimity of scalar history. The ripped stone walls portrayed make the quarry itself appear as sculpture.
