Religious buildings, Europe

In the group of works entitled “Religiöse Gebäude, Europa” (Religious Buildings, Europe), 1980, the photographer focuses on the sacred Christian architecture of Europe and its universal formal austerity. Wunderlich uses the represented façades the central perspective or occasionally from the side, to illustrate how religion and aesthetics are inscribed as a conglomerate in the urban architecture of Europe. The black-and-white photographic technique causes the brick buildings to appear as lifeless, concrete bodies. Unlike the depiction of the sacred buildings, Wunderlich creates a hard, unemotional distance.
