The Lines Between brings together four artistic positions that explore paper, the act of drawing, and the phenomenon of light as fields of thought and perception. Central to the exhibition are lines and the spaces between them: between trace and form, material and immateriality, structure and movement. Paper functions not merely as a support, but as an active resonant field. Light appears as an immaterial counterpart, questioning the act of seeing and its conditions.

Verena Freyschmidt presents works from her Rhizome series, in which drawing unfolds into an open, circular system. Through repeated marks, overlays, and subtle shifts, intricate networks emerge that evoke biological or geological structures: centres without focus, spaces without fixed orientation. Freyschmidt reflects on the drawing process itself – as both intellectual and bodily movement, where control and chance interpenetrate. Her approach to paper is simultaneously analytical and sensitive: lines and voids, tension and breathing enter into a precise equilibrium. The sheet becomes a space for thought, rendering internal growth visible.

Herbert Hinteregger explores transformation, reduction, contemplation, and concentration as layers of his process-based and conceptual approach to painting. While earlier works often employed ballpoint ink, his current paper works feature lines created from various tapes in vivid neon tones (“drawing with tape”), applied to cardboard supports. These interventions follow no narrative logic but structure the pictorial space rhythmically and energetically. By repurposing materials drawn from the painting process, the line is extended both into the surface and into space – a continuation of his tape-based spatial drawings presented at Bernhard Knaus Fine Art, Frankfurt in 2020 and at Galerie Lombardi-Kargl, Vienna in 2022. In the interplay of materiality, colour, and light, the line becomes both boundary and passage. For this exhibition, Hinteregger has invited the artist Myriam Holme to enter into dialogue with a work on flag fabric. Her translucent textile, overlaid with sprayed neon lines, offers a light, breathing counterpoint to Hinteregger’s material density. Both works investigate colour as a physical trace – dense in Hinteregger, ephemeral in Holme – opening reflections on duration, transformation, and perception.

Harald Kröner investigates the line in his paper works as a carrier of movement, language, and memory. His large-scale sheets combine layering, superimposition, and rhythmic structures into vibrating fields in which the drawing process remains visible. Kröner understands drawing as a language of thought – precise, open, prosaic. He extends this principle into his neon works, where light becomes a continuation of the line in space. Glowing lines and wordplay hover between legibility and abstraction. The gesture of drawing is transformed into energy and spatial presence through illuminated text. Between paper and light, a field of tension emerges where mark, movement, and perception reflect one another.

Together, the works of Freyschmidt, Hinteregger with Holme, and Kröner constitute a rigorous meditation on material, line, and the interstices between. The Lines Between refers both to the lines themselves and the relationships that arise between them: tensions, transitions, and resonances formed through marking, layering, and light. The exhibition foregrounds perception as a process. Visible and invisible are not opposed, but enter into relation. The line appears as both boundary and connection, as trace on paper and as presence in space. Within it, movement, thought, and light converge.
