The ice landscapes of high mountain regions have long captivated the human imagination. However, accelerating global warming is causing them to melt at an unprecedented rate — including the glaciers of the Alps, which are increasingly affected by this retreat. As vital freshwater reservoirs, these glaciers are of particular ecological importance and represent an irreplaceable natural heritage.
A new exhibition at the German Environment Agency offers visitors an insightful look into the unique and fragile world of ice landscapes. In his photographic work, artist Thomas Wrede engages with themes of nature, its vulnerability, and our complex, often contradictory relationship with it. Since 2017, he has explored the impact of climate change on Alpine glaciers through an artistic lens. His photographs convey a subtle yet powerful visual language, evoking a sense of unease through their inherent ambivalence.
