Stefan à Wengen's atmospherically dense paintings show figurative and representational motifs. The images are subject to a strong content that relate to cultural codes and at the same time allow ambiguous interpretations. His pictures deal with themes of existential weighting that refer to art history as well as always including the present.

Stefan à Wengen was born in Basel in 1964, lives and works in Düsseldorf, where he co-founded SPAM-CONTEMPORARY project space in 2012.

In 2010, his works were shown in a large monographic overview exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Luzern and in numerous group exhibitions such as the Kunsthalle Mannheim, the Musée des beaux-arts La Chaux-de-Fonds, the Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, the Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr, im Kunsthaus Glarus, the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin or the Center d'Art Contemporain, Fri-Art in Friborg.
His paintings and drawings are in numerous private and institutional collections such as the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Kunstmuseum Luzern, the Swiss Federal Art Collection, the Ricola Fondation collection and others.
