With the glaciologist Dr Christoph Mayer
and the artist Prof. Thomas Wrede
Tuesday, 14 April 2026, 7 pm
The global disappearance of glaciers is the most tangible consequence of climate change to date. For years, the photographer and artist Thomas Wrede has been documenting this process in his series White Was the Snow. Through his glacier photography at Switzerland’s Rhône Glacier, Wrede aims to make the melting ice visible and to capture the desperate attempts of local people to counteract this development.
Glaciologist Christoph Mayer of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities has also been observing the decline of the Alpine ice landscape for decades. He studies the environmental impacts of its melting as well as its role as a climate archive, enabling insights into past and future environmental conditions.
In a presentation of works, with short lectures and a discussion, these two perspectives on glacier melt are brought together.
