“Membrane” – the group exhibition celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Neue Galerie Gladbeck at its current location – is dedicated to the appearance of skin with seven contemporary positions: as a permeable surface that mediates between mental state and physical presence. It forms the resonance surface for cultural traditions and group affiliation, but also individuality.
On display are photographs and paintings by Daniele Buetti, Slawomir Elsner, Shirin Neshat, Helena Parada Kim, Thomas Ruff, Nicola Samori and Cindy Sherman. Parada Kim, Samori and Elsner, who represent positions in figurative painting and belong to younger generations, have already exhibited at the Neue Galerie Gladbeck. They are now back as guests with new paintings that are both typical and specific to the theme. From Buetti, Neshat, Ruff and Sherman, who each work (in decidedly different ways) with photography, we are able to show exhibits from their early groups of works from the 1980s and 1990s, i.e. from the years in which they all attracted attention and became internationally known.
