WEISS WAR DER SCHNEE
02.10.2025 - 10.01.2026
Leica Galerie Düsseldorf, KÖ Gallerie, Königsallee 60, 40121 Düsseldorf
The Leica Gallery in Düsseldorf is presenting Thomas Wrede’s exhibition WEISS WAR DER SCHNEE (White Was the Snow) until 10 January 2025, featuring works including pieces from his Glacier Project. In his photographic oeuvre, Wrede explores the intriguing boundary between staging and reality, with landscapes serving as his central motif. His works investigate both found and deliberately constructed scenes in nature, always operating within the dynamic interplay of authenticity and artifice.
Wrede’s Glacier Project, which began in 2017 with photographs of Switzerland’s Rhône Glacier, comprises large-scale panoramas alongside exterior and interior views of glacier caves. The series is based on the concept of the “packaged landscape.” In an effort to slow the rapid melting of glaciers, vast ice surfaces are temporarily or permanently covered with fleece. Close-up images reveal the weathered coverings, exposing rubble and dirty snow beneath. The morbid beauty of the folds, the chosen framings, and the rich tonal range of greys combine to create painterly and hauntingly unique compositions.
