STEFAN à WENGEN. THE POWER OF LOVE
23.08.2024 - 26.01.2025
Museum Ratingen
A representative selection from his extensive oeuvre will be made for the upcoming solo show to mark the artist's 60th birthday. Stefan à Wengen works primarily in the medium of painting, but he is equally fascinated by drawing and sculpture. His figurative depictions show nature scenes in tropical regions, huts and boats as well as portraits of animals and people, complemented by classical sculptures that appear like foreign bodies here. The pictures are richly detailed, often irritatingly charged with art-historical quotations. In the darkness of night, their mood can be both eerie and wistful. Stefan à Wengen is thus one of the contemporary artists who stage dream and reality in equal measure. Inspired by images of Romanticism and Surrealism, he combines beauty with shivers.
The “Obstacles” form a separate part of the exhibition. The small white-painted sculptures, which are made up of various found objects, are reminiscent of African and Oceanic cult objects.
