French Cultural Institute in Bratislava
Sébastien de Ganay’s work “Around the World” will be installed in Bratislava’s Old Town. The artist’s new sculpture will be on display for one week as part of the program organized by the French Institute in Slovakia.
The artwork, consisting of two life-size watchtowers facing each other, is made of painted aluminum and has been perforated with numerous bullet holes. The artwork reflects the tensions that shape our world today. It evokes the rise of surveillance societies, prisons, and the many walls, borders, and camps that have marked the history of the past century. It also addresses the global resurgence of extremism, the continued use of the death penalty, and the persecution of LGBTQ+ communities in many parts of the world.
In Slovakia, this work holds special significance, as it serves as a reminder of the Iron Curtain and the divisions it caused. At the same time, it highlights the ongoing erosion of tolerance, openness, and human rights worldwide.
