As part of its Netherlands Year, the Kunsthalle Darmstadt is dedicating a major exhibition to the internationally renowned painter and graphic artist Robert Zandvliet (born 1970). At the heart of the presentation are nine color field paintings from his most recent series, Paradaidha.
Zandvliet first gained widespread recognition in the mid-1990s with his monumental still lifes. He soon moved beyond realism, however, turning instead to a rearticulation of classical genres such as portraiture and landscape—at times also engaging with works by other painters. Rather than beginning with photography or the direct study of nature, he starts from the idea of an object, striving—after a period of experimentation—to realize its painterly embodiment as directly and cohesively as possible in a single sustained process.
