Artist Talk: Robert Zandvliet, Kunsthalle Darmstadt
04.09.2026
Saturday 29 August 26, 3.00 pm
Robert Zandvliet in conversation with Invar-Torre Hollaus
With the large-format colour-field paintings from his latest series, ‘Paradaidha’, the Dutch painter Robert Zandvliet opens a window onto an idealised natural world at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt. On the day before the exhibition closes, there is now a special opportunity to gain deeper insights into his working processes.
Zandvliet does not begin his paintings by studying nature, but rather with the idea of an object, in order to redefine classical genres such as landscape painting. But how does this process of abstraction unfold right through to its realisation on the canvas? The artist answers these and other questions in conversation with Dr. phil. I Invar-Torre Hollaus, lecturer in art history and art theory at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). Hollaus has studied Zandvliet’s recent work in depth and only recently published an article about the artist in the renowned New York art magazine *The Brooklyn Rail*. Kunsthalle director Dr León Krempel will welcome Robert Zandvliet and his guest to this discussion on Saturday afternoon.
The discussion will be held in English
