For Katharina Hinsberg, the cut is just as significant as the line she releases from the sheet of paper. Of particular interest to her is the edge of the sheet.
In the series “Marginalis”, the paper’s edge becomes the central theme. Hinsberg traces the outline of the sheet by hand using red ink, and then cuts along that line. The outer contour of the exposed line is the straight, machine-made edge of the paper, while the inner side is irregular, following the hand-drawn ink line.
In her most recent series, “Säumnisse”, Hinsberg expands upon this approach, arriving at new results. She writes:
“The paper edges are narrow and razor-sharp. I dye these edges with red ink; they mark and border the outer limits of the sheet. Then I cut through the paper with a knife, using a ruler as a guide, dividing it into two parts. I cut through the previously neutral, empty surface of the paper, and in doing so, I differentiate it...
The resulting cut edges are again dyed red before I shift and reassemble them into a new format. In these works, ‘Säumnisse’, the cutting no longer follows the drawing – instead, the drawing follows the cut, in the act of tracing the edges with colour. Outer edges may become internal lines, while cut margins can transform from inner to outer contours.”
Hinsberg’s works are held in both national and international collections and have been exhibited in museums across Germany and abroad. Most recently, the Städtische Galerie Neunkirchen offered an insight into her practice in the exhibition “The Parts and the Whole”. Hinsberg lives and works in Neuss and is a Professor of Conceptual Painting at the Hochschule der Künste Saar in Saarbrücken. In 2025, she is serving as a Senior Fellow at the Erich Auerbach Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Cologne.
