Flo Maak works with photography as well as other media. Starting from photographic processes and ways of thinking, the artist expands the concept of photography into space as well as into the social field. Maak explores the potentials and possible entanglements of pictorial space and exhibition space both in individual works and installation contexts.
In doing so, he reflects not least on the digital space of our everyday life in impressive hybrids between classical media, genres and new visual surfaces. He creates spaces of experience in which he relates photographs to each other through spatial arrangements, text elements and through interventions in the exhibition architecture. The relationship between animals and humans, humans and the environment, and nature and culture repeatedly forms a thematic bracket of his multi-layered artistic explorations. Dichotomous opposites such as 'High' and 'Low' or 'Nature' and 'Culture' are thereby questioned, subverted or intertwined in new modes of experience. He thus also opens up a critical perspective on the Anthropocene and the destruction of our common living space. He sometimes places individual images in different groups of works and adds new works to them even years later. In this way, he continually explores the limits and possibilities of representational strategies in photography and beyond.
In addition to his career as a solo artist, Flo Maak also works increasingly in collaborations with other artists, such as Lasse Lau, Sascha Pohle or Magdalena Emmerig, in order to explore socio-political contexts on an aesthetic level. Among other things, experimental documentaries and multimedia works are created that also integrate performative elements.
